The clock is ticking!
Not only is it February, but it’s almost over. We are now facing the crunch time – so much to do, as soon as the weather changes – the list seems overwhelming at times as it gets longer and longer in order to satisfy my sense of safety.
There are more things I would like to do of course – but that is life on a boat, you can *always* be upgrading and fine tuning. B.O.A.T. – Break Out Another Thousand. But short of winning the lottery, we will have to be satisfied with the things we can do in the time and budget we have.
The breakdown…
I’ve broken things down into basic categories –
- to be done on the hard,
- on water,
- either,
- other
On the hard includes things like going up the mast to put up the radar dome and tricolour light on the top of the mast – easier when it’s not swinging in the breeze.
Netting and fiberglass work can be done on the water.
We can attach the solar panels either place, though I think over water is better than over a drop myself. We can always put the dinghy under the frame while in the water.
We will assemble the frames for the solar panels themselves on land somewhere else (That’s the “other” I was talking about).
Other things
We were just talking the other day and realized we really need to replace the cushions somewhere along the way in between everything else. The old ones are just old and smelly and not ok to really keep and live in full time. They have to go. Blue plaid is nice, but a little 1970s as well, time for an update.
As the rain stops we can start to whittle away at the list until it’s manageable – pull the boat out in April if we can, ideally by May we should be heading to Portland up the river for our test run, practicing grocery runs at public docks and dealing with public transit – which will be the case at most of our stops as we don’t have room for bikes unless they folded – and those are a little beyond our budget at the moment.
We will then have to decide what changes if any we need to make, and find a clear day with Coast Guard approval to cross the bar since we are under 30 feet – sometimes it’s closed to smaller vessels. Once across the bar, we will head north to the San Juan Islands before sailing south along the US Pacific Coast.
Ever onward!
So, we are gearing up both as a team and as individuals for the months ahead and the work to be done. But in the end, we will be ready for our trip and we will take off – and finally, the adventures will begin.
